News: Plane Crash On Route To Shepparton

Two people have been killed in a light plane crash north of Melbourne.

The wreckage of a twin-engine plane was found by local police in a wooded area, near the tiny town of Clonbinane, near Wandong.

Victoria Police spokesman Wayne Wilson says no-one else was on board the plane.

A search was sparked in the Wandong-Mount Disappointment area, when residents reported the incident.

Mr Wilson says, 'A call was received by emergency services around about 8.20pm (AEST) from people who believe that they heard a plane and heard an explosion.'

It's believed the flight originated from Essendon Airport and was heading to Shepparton, 180km north-east of Melbourne.

Earlier, the weather bureau issued a severe weather warning for western and central districts of Victoria, for severe winds averaging 75km/h with gusts to 110km/h, especially in elevated areas.

The crash area is near the top of the Great Dividing Range.

Police units, along with a helicopter, are currently involved in the recovery operation.
